Behind the Cabin Door October 2022 : "When hearing from God, start with your thoughts. What is the pattern? Pray, then go to His Word..."

It was early morning and I was busy making oatmeal and bread for my family. I was a new mom of two little ones under two and living in a very small home, many, many years ago. I grabbed a bottle of fruit preserves and set it on the edge if the counter but then had a thought,
“I should move that jar before my kids come into the kitchen and knock it over.”
I passed the the thought off and said to myself, “It will be ok." But you might be able to guess what happened a few minutes later….
My kids ran through the kitchen as they were playing together and one of them very lightly tapped that jar of preserves! I watched the jar fall and shatter to the floor in a glob of sticky mess I now had to clean up. Then I heard Him! The love of my life who is always with me, always loves me, and has promised to never leave my side. God spoke to me in almost an audible voice...“I told you to move that jar.”
I stopped everything and stood there in silence. “That was just a little thought I had, wasn’t it?”, I thought to myself, But I knew it wasn’t this time. Today God was teaching me how simply He speaks to me and leads me through simple thoughts.

I’m still a mommy but not as young and with many more kids too but God still speaks to me everyday all the time in my thoughts. It is not hard for me to hear His voice or to trust if that was really Him or not because He still loves me and He still stays by my side in an every day busy and growing home. I have learned that just as simply as He speaks to me I simply must obey what He tells me to do. I simply move that" jar of preserves" or simply pray for my kids or simply share Jesus with someone He brings to me... It's not hard and shouldn't been a struggle to obey the one who knows us more than anyone and gave His life for us. I’m less likely to stop and hesitate with thoughts like, “That was just me or I really don’t want to or even I’m afraid to.” It’s in that small time of hesitation that we could miss an opportunity for God to use us. Here is the Good News again! He loves us, will never leave us, and will always forgive us when we have missed it!

If you have been in a place where it has been hard for you to hear His voice I want to encourage you that He is right by your side! He is speaking to you every day and always showing you things! I pray this little story of mine has opened your eyes a little to see how soft and simple hearing Him is and can be for you too! Start with your thoughts you have been having lately. See if there has been a pattern to them. Pray over your thoughts. Then bring your thoughts back to Word. Remember God will never give you a thought that goes against what the Bible teaches. He will speak to us and always confirm His Word as you read. Reading His Word is just as easy and simple because we are not alone, He is with us!
